Moonrocks & Sunrocks: What’s the Difference?

Moonrocks & Sunrocks: What's the Difference?

What Are Moonrocks?

Moonrocks or buds dipped in hash oil and then rolled in kief are frequently mentioned in stoner legend: One bong rip of these potent, distillate-soaked nugs will catapult you into the stratosphere.

Moonrocks have grown in popularity in legal cannabis markets and have long been a staple of dispensary concentrate menus. They can also be made at home.

The origins of moon rocks (the weed kind) are vague. Still, rumours abound that they were invented by the dispensary Starbudz760, with legendary West Coast rapper Kurupt popularizing the product and trademarking his own version called Kurupt Moonrock.

Moonrocks are a THC Megazord: they are cannabis buds that have been dipped in hash oil and then rolled in kief. GSC has traditionally been used, but any strain will suffice.

Though the potency of each batch of moon rocks varies depending on how they’re made and who makes them, the consensus is that they have a THC content of around 50%. For comparison, most flower contains about 20% THC. As a result, each hit feels like its own experience.

And what about the high? Don’t even get me started on the high, buddy. Starting in the head and eventually spreading down to your toes, a moon rock high is a slow burn that will remind you you’ve landed at a mountaintop you may not be prepared to climb.

What Are Sunrocks?

Sun rocks take advantage of moon rocks and amp them up—potent effects, high THC, and a combination of cannabis extracts.

They are similar to moon rocks on the surface. However, moon rocks can contain bud, hash oil, and kief from any strain and quality, making it difficult to predict terpene flavours and effects.

All components of sun rocks—top-shelf buds, pure, flavorful extracts, and potent kief—are derived from the same strain. The most common strain as sun rocks is fan-favourite, myrcene-heavy OG Kush.

Due to the thick, opaque hash oil used in moon rocks, it’s impossible to tell if the bud is good until you buy one and break it open. Instead, sun rocks substitute high-quality hash oil extracted from nugs of the same strain for low-quality hash oil extracted from trim and shake.

The generated resin is trichome-rich, delivering more flavour per hit than standard hash oil. Furthermore, the oil’s purity makes the extract clearer, allowing consumers to see the bud through the kief dusting.

These improved elements aren’t just for aesthetic purposes; they also contribute to the increased potency of sun rocks. At their most potent, moon rocks can contain up to 60% THC, but sun rocks can have up to 80% THC.

Moonrocks Vs. Sunrocks

The distinction between sun rocks and moonrocks is much more significant.

To begin with, sun rocks are far more potent than moon rocks. The latter has a THC potency of 40-50%, whereas the former has a strength of more than 50% and up to 80%. This fact should be carefully considered before you light up. Even seasoned customers may be taken aback by the impact of a sunrock.

Sunrocks typically use the same strain of flower and extract, whereas moon rocks only require nugs, kief, and hash, which can all be made from different strains or a mixture. OG Kush is the most popular sunrock strain.

The method by which these two types of infused flowers are created allows you to see the bud used in sun rocks even better, whereas the view in moon rocks is obstructed by kief. However, as long as you buy from a reputable manufacturer and dispensary, this is not a problem.

How to Smoke Moon rocks weeds

Moon rocks are highly suggested for experienced cannabis users due to their strong potency. Here’s some guidance on how to get ready for your moon rocks adventure.

  • Make use of glassware.

Because moon rocks are not your typical flower, use glassware with your bong or pipe. It’s rough and greasy and must be torn apart piece by piece, much like splitting a Nerd’s Rope with someone.

If you intend to roll it up by itself, reconsider; not only will you need more moon rocks (unless you buy, like, 18 grams of it), but you will also be unable to stay it lit like a regular blunt or joint.

  • Place it on top of a flower.

The oily texture of moon rocks makes them difficult to light and keep a cherry on top of, but if you throw them on top of a particular flower, you’ll be fine.

You’ll also be twice as high, but at this point, you shouldn’t be concerned about your level of highness.

You can roll up a blunt or joint and make it work if you break up some moon rocks weed and sprinkle it on top of the ground bud.

  • Before smoking, complete all of your daily tasks.

We always like to get high and do things, but moon rocks aren’t going to get you high and ready for action, Jackson. If you have a workout or some tasks to complete for the day, do them before smoking, or you’ll pass out and wake up stressed about how much time you wasted.

How to Smoke Sunrocks

1. Glass

Most customers recommend smoking sun rocks and moon rocks with glass, either a pipe or a bong. Adding them to a joint or blunt can be more trouble than it’s worth, and because of the distillate coating, you’ll want to skip the grinder on these. Instead, use a utility knife or razor blade to cut sun rocks into small chunks.

2. Layer it in a bowl

When adding pieces to regular ground flowers in a bowl, don’t just pile them on top. Instead, mix or layer them with other flowers to ensure that the bowl burns evenly.

3. Make use of hemp wick.

When smoking only sun rocks, try to break them up as tiny as possible to prevent wasting time and plant matter trying to light more oversized nugs. To get the most out of those flavour-forward elements, use a hemp wick rather than a regular butane lighter to avoid scorching the product and allow its full flavour to shine through.

How are Moonrocks are made?

Moon Rocks are simple to make, but they require certain ingredients only the most experienced growers or members of specific cannabis organizations can access. First, you’ll need cannabis oil to cover the bud, creating a layer of what appears to be honey around the bud. Then, apply a layer of kief to the bud, leaving it looking sandy.

The disadvantage of Moon Rocks is that you can’t see the bud, so it’s very easy to make fake ones, and the buyer who purchases them won’t even realize it until they open the bud. It’s as simple as grabbing some bad bud, covering it in any kind of oil, and rolling it in a bad hash, creating something that looks exactly like a Moon Rock but isn’t even smokeable. Because many Moon Rock vendors do not allow you to open the bud before purchasing it, we recommend only purchasing Moon Rocks from reputable dispensaries in areas where it is legal to do so.

How are Sunrocks are made?

For starters, everything in the bud comes from the same strain, which is usually OG Kush. So the first step is to select a high-quality bud and obtain some BHO extract; to ensure maximum purity and the least amount of contaminants possible. Then, take another but and spread the BHO thinly over it so it’s not visible unless you inspect the bud.

Aside from being extremely potent, the flavours are also much more intense, providing a more pleasurable experience than smoking straight BHO; you can comfortably smoke a joint rather than just one devastating drag, providing an incredible mental effect and a tasty taste experience.
